“You did what!” Anu screamed in genuine surprise as she sprung up from the couch she had been lounging on as Damilola recounted what had happened between Muyiwa and herself. Anu shook her head as if trying to dispel it of a fog and stared at Damilola incredulously.

“This isn’t you at all babes. You came out of a relationship because your man was cheating and now you are sleeping with a dude in a committed relationship.” Damilola looked at Anu with a half smile on her face and watched her friend rant. It wasn’t like Anu was any saint but of course she liked to act Miss Perfect and she wasn’t in any mood to argue with her.

“Just look at yourself Dammy”  Anu continued “you have misplaced priorities now and I think your focus should be on delivering the baby and moving on to other things not shagging with the doctor. What if he is simply preying on your emotions? How about if you are just a pawn in the game men play with women?” Damilola burst out laughing at this and replied “I am perfectly fine Anu, I can take care of myself. You should know I am no pushover and if this is a game, I think I need some excitement in my life and really I got nothing to lose after all.” Damilola picked up her bag and giving her friend a quick hug, she dashed out of the room for her appointment with Muyiwa. “Halima said she will like to meet you one of these days Dammy, what do you think?” Damilola raised her head up quickly from the glass of water she was drinking and stared at Muyiwa with saucer wide eyes. “You want me to meet your girlfriend?” she finally managed to sputter out after receiving Muyiwa’s even gaze. “Do you think that is such a good idea Muyi?” shrugging carelessly, he cocked his eyebrow questioningly “Why is it not a good idea, you are my very good friend and Halima has heard so much about you. It’s about time you guys meet in person don’t you think” Her eyes rounded more in surprise as she heard the word friend.

Perhaps Anu is right and this is all a game to him, she fumed to herself silently. He sleeps with me and has the audacity to call me a friend, well if he thought he was good at playing then she would show him she was good at winning. Smiling sweetly, Damilola gave him a cool stare as she replied “It should be fun meeting your precious Halima, Doctor.” Standing up from her chair, she moved closer to him and whispered “But in the meantime, this patient needs some doctoring, would you attend to me pls?”

Damilola writhed in pain as the blood seeped out of her pants and stained her dress. Clutching her stomach on the bed she groaned out aloud as she struggled to grab her mobile phone. Something was wrong and she couldn’t tell what it was. She had suddenly felt a sharp pain in her belly when she was having her bath some minutes ago and had had to come to the bedroom to lie down for a bit. The pain was growing worse and now the blood, Damilola couldn’t fight back the tears as she screamed out aloud as another pang of pain tore through her. It was like her belly was on fire and her vision was beginning to cloud. Am I dying? Is this what death feels like? Oh my poor baby, she sobbed to herself silently as she managed to dial Muyiwa’s number. He picked up on the second ring and she managed to croak out what was happening. The last thing she heard before losing consciousness was his “I am on my way love.”

When she came to, she was in a hospital bed and without looking down at her hands she knew some tubes were attached to her. She rolled her head to her right and met Anu’s concerned gaze. Her friend’s eyes were bloodshot from crying and she managed a feeble smile before croaking “What happened Anu?” Anu moved closer to her and hugged her gently “Hush baby now, rest. That is all you need, it’s nothing serious.” The alarm went off in her head then as she realized that she was in a hospital and she started up so suddenly that Anu reeled backwards with a startled expression on her face. She clutched at her stomach “My baby, tell me my baby is alright!” Her violent reaction drained her of the little energy she had and she dropped back on the bed weakly just as Muyiwa strolled in.
He had a patient’s file in his hand and he looked like he had been working all day. She could sense the sadness in his eyes even in her weak state and she whispered, “The baby is gone isn’t it?” Muyiwa stared at her before nodding his head in affirmation and she closed her eyes and allowed the tears to flow freely.
