Episode 12 - Now That You Are Here; A Tale of Deceit and Betrayal

[Excerpt from Episode 11: Gbade’s car and clothes were gone judging from the empty space in the closet that clearly showed the space had been occupied before. Damilola wept silently as he handed her the key of the house which he had taken the initiative to lock up and Anu had to resume her duty of consoling her]. To read Episode 11 CLICK HERE

Muyiwa called her two days after the incident apologized for having lost control when he should have been more mature in handling the situation. He couldn’t see that animal treat her like garbage or hurt her anymore and he had had to react. She swallowed the tears that threatened to spill over as she replied shakily
“It’s alright Muyiwa, he is gone now and that is all that matters. I have allowed myself to be a fool in love for too long. While there might not be much of a future with you, I feel safer with you.” Even as she said it, the guilt that came with the relationship with Gbade flooded her and Anu’s probing eyes wasn’t helping matters. She had not been able to go back to her own house since the incident and she had continued to stay on at Anu’s. Muyiwa promised to call her later in the day and after hanging up the phone, she met Anu’s full glare.

“When would you learn Damilola, tell me. Is it until when Halima catches you herself that you would learn your lesson? Don’t be stupid, you are smarter than all of these you know, I see nothing but trouble at the end. Leave Muyiwa alone, he is nothing but bad and you allow it.” Damilola refused to say a word because she knew Anu was right and trying to defend herself was only going to ensue in an argument so she simply said “I will be going back home today. Thank you so much for the hospitality Anu, you are really the best friend anyone could ask for.” Anu rolled her eyes unimpressed and shook her head resignedly “If that is your way of trying to get me to shut up, you won’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“I am pregnant Muyiwa.” Muyiwa’s face widened in complete amazement as Halima delivered her news calmly like it was the most natural thing in the world. Different thoughts crossed his mind as he stared at her pretty face; she had been there for him when things had been bad and he felt a weight on his chest as he realized he had not been good to her. He had had everything in total control just before Damilola waltz into their lives and everything went upside down. He knew Halima was from a strong Muslim background and even their relationship had been war enough before his family accepted him. He ran his hand through his head as he stared at her and she shifted uncomfortably in her seat “What is it Muyiwa, you haven’t said a word. What are we going to do?” Her words jerked him from his reverie and without even thinking, he blurted out “We are going to get married.” He had never seen her so happy as her face went radiant like a burst of sunshine had suddenly lighted it up, she screamed in joy and clapped her hand together gleefully like a baby as she threw herself at him and rained kisses on his face. Muyiwa wished he could feel the joy she was feeling as his thoughts ran to Damilola. This was real bad. What was he going to tell her? How was she going to take the news? She was certainly going to be hurt there was no doubt about that and he wished there was something he could do. He couldn’t face her or deliver the news and it took a strong will of his mind to get his thoughts off her as he tried to pay attention to Halima’s gushing on and on about wedding plans.
Damilola had a special plan for Muyiwa that night after he had called to say he was coming over to see her that night. She was excited, it was three weeks since the incident and they had not really been flowing like they used to. Although they managed to talk everyday she had felt there was still a rift between them as he was always sounding distracted and he wasn’t as good natured as she remembered. He had also been giving one excuse or the other as to why he couldn’t come see her whenever she brought up the topic so she was really happy when he had called to say he was coming over.

She had on a sexy jumpsuit that showed off her midriff and she had also pulled up her hair in a bun, showing off her long beautiful neck which she had adorned with pearls that had cost her father a small fortune when he gave it to her three years back as birthday present. She wore it only on special occasions and this was special enough an occasion for her. She smiled in anticipation as she heard the doorbell ring and she sashayed to the door. She was all smiles as she opened the door and threw her arms around Gbade who she could not help but notice was looking tired and had a shadow to his eyes as if he hadn’t slept in days. Her enthusiasm dimmed a bit when he quickly disengaged himself from her embrace and headed straight for the mini-bar. He poured himself a drink of brandy and gulped it down in one gulp before he poured a drink of vodka and turned to face her. He looked as if he was in pain and she asked in a shaky voice “Is everything alright Muyi, you are scaring me” He stared at her with a rueful smile on his face before he said “I am getting married Dammy.” Her heart stopped in her chest and she suddenly felt hurt, the pearls suddenly felt like they were burning her skin and she took another look at his face. He was serious, there was no doubt to that and with a gasp she turned and fled the room.
