Most Popular Food Combinations Eaten By Nigerian Students

Living the life of an undergraduate is not such an easy task in Nigeria. From hectic hours of lectures to many hours devoted on projects, assignments and still trying to find time for extracurricular activities, one would expect that a balanced diet can help replenish all the energy.
However this post gives a quick rundown of some food combinations that students take to keep body and soul together.

Garri and Groundnut:

If you didn’t take garri and groundnut as a university undergraduate, it means you are probably from a really wealthy family. Garri and groundnut is the Nigerian student’s answer to cornflakes and even the rich kids are sometimes soaking garri for drinking. Garri and groundnut most especially becomes a saving grace for many students that exhaust their allowances before the end of semester and they have no other option than to “shack” garri.
Bread and Beans: Who needs burger when you can have bread and beans instead? The Nigerian students have once again been able to conveniently replace the luxury of burger with bread and beans. After consuming bread and beans in the morning, you are certain of saving lunch money and having only dinner. All you need during the day is to keep consuming water, bread and beans holds your stomach strong like cement.
Noodles with Yam or Bread:What faster meal is there to cook if not noodles, it takes between ten to fifteen minutes to get your noodles ready and have enough time to dash off for classes. However the problem with noodles is that it doesn’t sustain you for long hence the combination with yam or bread which contains enough starch to keep you going for hours. It may seem strange watching a student consume noodles with yam or bread but it is an effective strategy against hunger.
Garri (Eba) and Beans: Beans is a favourite among Nigerian students so don’t be surprised that it keeps coming up on this list. Beans is a source of protein so it is easy to combine it with garri which is carbohydrate. This time around, it is not soaked garri we are talking about and it holds your stomach strong. Yoruba students often claim that nothing beats a meal of cold ‘eba’ and beans in the morning.

Concoction Rice:Concoction rice is one of the most common foods among Nigerian students. With a shortage of ingredients unlike when you are cooking jollof rice from the comfort of your home, concoction rice is an alternative to concoction rice and more often than not, the effort of many students joined together. It is usually made with palm oil to give it colouring and you can garnish it with pieces of fish or meat if you can afford it. A group of students gathered over a pot of concoction rice is a common sight in the school hostels.
