Now That You Are Here: A Tale of Deception and Betrayal (Episode 5)

[Excerpt from Episode 4: She wished she could comfort him but she didn’t know how. Everything she said or tried to do only seem to upset him more and in that moment she decided the baby had to go to save her relationship. Pushing aside her hair from eyes, she looked at him with red-rimmed eyes and said quietly “I will fix this Gbade.”] To read episode 4: CLICK HERE

She pulled the tip of her hair nervously as she stepped into the doctor’s office. It wasn’t like she owed anybody an explanation on why she was getting rid of the baby but it still felt embarrassing telling a doctor she wanted an abortion.
She took in a quick scan of the office as the smiling young man waved her to a seat. It was the same cold, sterile walls of every hospital and the whiteness of the walls made her feel all the more evil for what she was about to do. She took in the doctor fully since entering the room and made a mental note that he was young and quite good looking. She guessed him to be in his mid-twenties and not more than twenty-seven at the most.

His raised eyebrow made her realize she had been staring and she nervously cleared her throat as she choked out what she wanted to do. His smiling expression didn’t change, it was like he encountered a lot of this everyday on the job and she felt totally ridiculous as she waited for his response. He stared at her for about another minute before he finally spoke. “If you don’t mind my intruding, may I ask why you want to do it? He doesn’t want the baby?” Damilola looked at him and for no apparent reasons she opened up to him all that was going on and how she was doing this to save her relationship with him. He said not another word as he picked up the telephone and called the receptionist to direct all other patients to the other doctors as he was going to be a bit busy.
Muyiwa didn’t know what he was doing but he was certain that he couldn’t let her go through with the abortion. Not only was she beautiful with her nervousness as she told her story, but she was doing it for all the wrong reasons. How could she be willing to abort for a guy that cheated on her and is just a boyfriend? What if he ends up not marrying her? As these thoughts coursed through him, he started speaking to her and lost consciousness of time. When they finally finished, he realized she had spent two hours in his office but he was glad that he had been able to change her mind. As she made to leave, they exchanged contacts so he could check in on her and help as the pregnancy developed.

It was now about three days since Gbade had gone back to the States and she was feeling a bit depressed. Things hadn’t gone well after she told him that she couldn’t go through the abortion and had decided to keep the baby. His attitude towards her had been cold and distant and even on the day he was to leave, he had barely brushed a kiss on her lips before he was hurrying up. She had waited till the flight departed before letting the tears flow. She cried all the way home and went straight for the bath where she soaked herself in her favourite scent and cried some more. Muyiwa’s call came the next day after Gbade’s departure and they had fixed an appointment for him to come over this evening.

Damilola couldn’t help admit it that she found the doctor interesting but there was nothing she could do about that. She was in a relationship, pregnant for another man and an emotional wreck so now wasn’t the time to go after a crush. When the bell rang at past five, she quickly looked at her reflection in the mirror before going to answer the bell. Muyiwa was standing there with his shirt half out of his trouser and the first two buttons undone giving her a peek of his white singlet. He gave her a tired smile as she took his bag and closed the door after him. “I am sorry about my appearance but I have been at the hospital for three days stretch now and haven’t had any good rest,” as they both sat on the couch. She could see he was really tired and she felt bad that he had had to come over instead of going home straight to rest. Thank God she had cooked something! She quickly went to the kitchen and dished the jollof rice she had made. He protested feebly as she invited him to the dining table but she was not having any of that.

They talked as he ate and she found out he had a girlfriend he had been going steady with for about a year now. Telling him about Gbade seemed very natural and they talked without realizing how far the day was spent. Muyiwa was shocked to see that it was already eight-thirty pm and he asked to take his leave. He promised to see her the following week and as he drove off, he shook his head in wonder. Damilola was certainly an interesting woman and he could see clearly that she loved this Gbade guy, if only the bastard could see that. Some guys were just too blind to recognize the good placed in front of them. As he drove into his compound about an hour later, he picked out his cell phone to call his girlfriend Halimat, he wasn’t going to be another blind guy.
